Engineer 1

Position Purpose:

Maintains the guest rooms, public space and back of the house areas in good repair by performing various tasks related to a variety of trades including but not limited to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, painting, wall covering and masonry to ensure an attractive and well-maintained hotel.


Responsible for overall operation and maintenance of Central Plant; including but not limited to the hot water boilers, heating and cooling hydronic system centrifugal chillers.

  • Repairs, or replace items such as light bulbs, lamps, switches, outlets, faucets, toilets, hardware, filters, paint, furniture, wall coverings, caulking, grouting or other miscellaneous items
  • Assists other department team members in the systematic application of the preventive maintenance program.
  • Makes records of repairs made, or areas needing further attention.
  • Responsible for monitoring and scheduling of heating and cooling systems.
  • Perform shift rounds for all utilities, central plant, mechanical spaces and room temperatures.
  • First responder for all fire alarms and responsible for managing fire alarm panel during life safety emergency. Must be competent with the fire alarm panel and able to disable and re-enable alarm points.
  • Follow up and make corrections on heating and cooling problems in guestrooms and meeting rooms.
  • Responsible for mechanical equipment for the operation of the pool and spa. Must be able to perform water chemical readings, evaluate for potential problems and take corrective action. Able to evaluate, troubleshoot and take corrective action on the heater, pumps and filtration systems.



In addition to performance of the essential functions, this position may be required to perform a combination of the following supportive functions, with the percentage of time performing each function to be solely determined by the supervisor based upon the particular requirements of the company.

  • Maintains inventory of supplies needed to perform job function.
  • Reports major repairs and items that cannot be repaired to the dispatcher for further action and if necessary, place a room out of order.
  • Due to the nature of the business the individual may be required to do other duties and special projects as assigned by the supervisor, such as water proofing, shop clean up and labeling of hazardous materials.

Regular attendance in conformance with the standards, which may be established by Edward Hotel & Convention Center from time to time, is essential to the successful performance of this position. 

Perform reasonable duties as assigned by Management.


Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) may be required when performing work duties that may have the potential of risk to your health or safety. The hotel will provide the required PPE. Team members will be trained in the proper use and care of any assigned PPE. It is your responsibility to report defective, damaged or lost PPE, or equipment that does not fit properly, to your Manager.


The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities and be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Knowledge of all maintenance trades, including basic electrical, plumbing, mechanical and carpentry.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude for operation and repair of hotel equipment.
  • Working knowledge of basic hand and power tools.
  • Basic English language communication and mathematical skills in order to communicate with co- workers fully comprehend job assignments and perform accurate simple arithmetic functions.
  • Competent electrical trouble shooting skills.
  • Great Mechanical common sense and ability to take corrective actions.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to work with other employees and work around hotel guests and clients.
  • Able to work a variety of work shifts


  • City of Dearborn 1st Class Refrigeration License.
  • City of Dearborn 3rd Class Steam License.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience as an operating engineer in a medium to large building facility.


High School graduate or equivalent preferred.


Basic experience in maintenance trades, including electrical, plumbing, mechanical and carpentry.

 Prior property operations experience is required also.


Ability to obtain any government required license or certificate. CPR certification and/or First Aid training preferred.


All employees must maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance. Specific uniform guidelines and/or required articles of clothing will be explained to you as a part of the orientation process.


The hospitality business functions seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. In addition, this is a hospitality business and a hospitable service atmosphere must be projected at all times.

Upon employment, all employees are required to fully comply with Edward Hotel & Convention Centen rules and regulations for the safe and efficient operation of hotel facilities. Employees who violate hotel rules and regulations will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
